Firstly, you need to have the image outcome in your head. Only then you can create it. It made me plan my work properly. Secondly, I did not see the scanner as itself but as a camera, the scanner does have its uniqueness in the outcome compared to a camera. Thirdly, you need ideas and inspiration so I went online to look for inspirations and also read about some of the photograms artist. Forthly, be simple and play around with textures and colours. Personally, i prefer clean and simple pictures. Last but not the least, have fun.
The challenge of this assignment to me is the background of the scanned images. Since most of the items placed on the scanner are not flat, the scanner cannot be closed tightly thus resulting to a dark/black background. Later, i learnt that the properties can be changed to acquire the white background especially for school scanners. As for me, i covered the items with a white cloth which gives a wavy pattern at the back. Interesting mixture of textures. Another challenge is printing, getting the exact same colours and shades is nearly impossible i must say. From the computer screen, the glow in the picture looks more obvious than on paper. Well, people learn through experience and by making mistakes, it helps you grow!
Personally, i would give myself 8/10. It is simple, right composition (the way i placed the objects) and the flow of the objects. Probably i could have different sizes of the object as it will make a more interesting picture and it seems like the picture is quite straight forward to some but to me it is simple and attractive. If you take a closer look, you will see the textures on the butterflies and the shadow and glow around it.
So why fireflies? Wanted to put fire butterfly but it seems a handful to say. As everyone knows, fireflies have light. And there are beautiful creatures in the dark. Therefore, being in the dark feels like being secluded, lonely and lost. The picture shows how people are different(different textures and ways of the butterflies), people do have strength and courage inside of them (light), these personal strength will help them pave the way in the darkness. And the glow shows that the "lightness" that you have within you, the positive mindset, will influence others to be positive too and give them strength to proceed on while in the dark. Hmm... hopefully the story makes some sense. =)
My favourite images from my peers in class would be the mark's dried blue petals, mike's dessert rose flower and paul's film strip treble clef. Probably because of the contrast of the white background and the one item on the picture. The clean white background really draws you in due to the high contrast. It is simple and attractive. I feel the pictures are almost similar because of the feel to it.

All three uses items that we usually never "see" in our daily lives and give these items a new look. They didnt used it as it is but change it, like waiting for the flowers to wither, forming film strips to a music symbol and showing the desert flower in a different light. In my opinion, i think their pictures have the same feel with mine, but theirs, have the "presence". You are drawn into the picture which i think is because of the clean white background and its contrast.
